Vocational Training Programme

SLCs vision is ‘to create a community where together we work for the rights of special needs individuals who can earn a living, have friends and be part of other groups without being segregated.’

Keeping this vision, the vocational program is designed to accommodate students with mild, moderate to severe disabilities. It has a time frame within which the students undergo many work experiences starting from SLC school community, on-line selling to finally ‘Saraswati Inclusive Café’.

The Vocational Training Programme aims to empower the young adults to be independent, gain confidence and to be gainfully employed in their area of interest and strength. The young adults at the vocational training programme work on a variety of practical and hands on activities along with the life skills.


How to Apply for the Training program?

The young adult will undergo a trial where the clinical psychologist will observe and assess the following:


Reading and writing skills in Bahasa

Counting and number operations in Math

Self help Skills

Understanding of instructions

Social and Emotional skills

Post - trial, the parents will be given a report with recommendations regarding the year and group placement for the special need individual.

If the child is accepted for the programme, the student will be given an Individualized Education Plan keeping in mind the strengths and weaknesses.

Who can apply for the program?

We have a facility with two options. Your child may enter:


Regular Vocational Program:

Students in this group are with mild to moderate disability and need to have minimum academic skills, understand basic instructions and adaptable self regulatiory behaviour. They should not display behaviours that are injurious to others or to self.
These students will attend the program everyday (9 am to 3pm) and go through a transition to the workplace.

Sheltered Vocational Program:

Students in this group are with moderate to severe disability and need to understand basic instructions and imitation skills. They should also display basic self help skills like toileting and self feeding. They should not show behaviours that are injurious to others or to self.
These students attend the program everyday but for only 2-3 hrs and will be translated to the sheltered vocational work program. These students will always be assisted by an adult.

What is the structure?

The Regular Vocational Program is a 4 year program which focusses on the following:

Year 1: The students are taught basic skills of the vocational program. The academic structure holds 50% weightage while the social emotional holds 30% and skill development hold 20% weightage in theprogram. The practical experiences of work is within the school enviroment.
Year 2: The students are taught intermediate skills of the vocational program. The academic structure holds 40% weightage while the social emotional holds 35% and skill development hold 25% weightage in the program. The practical experiences of work are through bazaars guided by teachers and within the school enviroment.
Year 3: The students are taught advanced skills of the vocational program. The academic structure holds 20% weightage while the social emotional holds 35% and skill development hold 40% weightage in the program. The practical experiences of work are through bazaars and on-line orders.
Year 4: The students are taught advanced skills of the vocational program. The academic structure holds 15% weightage while the social emotional holds 35% and skill development hold 50% weightage in the program. The practical experiences of work are through bazaar, on-line and internship.
Year 5: translation program to work place.

Sheltered Vocational Program is a 2 year program which focusses on the following:

Year 1: The students are taught basic skills of the vocational program. Social emotional holds 50% and skill development hold 50% weightage in the program.
Year 2: The students are taught intermediate skills of the vocational program. The social emotional holds 40% and skill development hold 60% weightage in the program.
Year 3:Translation program to sheltered workplace.

What is the Vocational Training Program consist of?

The vocational program focusses on:


Academic Skills

Functional Math: It focusses on functional skills like time, money, budgeting etc in their daily lives.
Functional Bahasa: It focusses on functional skills like reading, speaking clearly, writing and having a meaningful conversation in their daily lives.
Computer : It focusses on functional skills like inputing data, searching for information on the internet, using of email for communication and basic functions of microsoft word and excel.

Social Emotional Skills

Social Communication: It is divided into social communication and social behaviour.
Social skills focusses on greetings, introducing themselves and having a conversation on various topics. Social behaiour focusses on the rules in different places and how best to deal with emaotions.
Activities of Daily Living: It focusses on different areas starting from basic self help skills, body hygene to comuting from home to school and workplace and independency in different community places.
Character Building: It focusses on different areas starting from knowing your body and its functions to knowing how to take care of your body and what is to be done in public and private places. It also focusses on developing and maintaing healthy relationships.

Skill Development

Cooking: Cooking skills focuses on different areas starting from learning about kitchen equipments, hygene and safety to learning about reciepes for daily cooking making them independent at home. It also focusses on some special recipies which are then used for selling on different occassions.
Creative Unit: Creative Unit focusses on craft skills to produce different merchandise items for selling on different occasions. The students are involved in the whole process from making to packaging the products for selling.
Music: Music is a fun activity where the students enjoy and express themselves.
Yoga: A workout is great to start your day. It focusses on stretching exercises which helps them to focus and gain concentration.
Painting: Painting is stress free activity where the students learn to explore with different materials and paints and be creative. The end result is then showcased

Audiologist and Ophthalmologist for vision and hearing test

An audiologist and opthamologist performs test to check hearing and vision of the child. This is essential to identify wheather there is a vision or hearing loss in the child which is preventing his/ her growth. Referral to the audiologist and opthamologist will depend on observations and the need of the child.

What is the future of my child after the training program is complete?


Vocational regular program :

Through the 4 year program the students undergo from minimal work exposure to maximum work exposure, preparing them for an intern at their 5th year which is then translated into working in the “SLC café”

Sheltered vocational program:

Sheltered vocational program: Throughout 2 years the students are exposed to various skill development with basic social emotional skills which will aid in working in a group and skills required to make the merchandise items. In their 3rd year the students will be translated to a sheltered workplace where they will be working under guidance to make the merchandise items for online and “SLC café”.
